Take part in the third 3-day International Recorder Workshop at Hingene Castle, the magnificent estate of the House of d’Ursel in Hingene (Bornem, Belgium). Treat yourself and be submerged for three days in the art of ensemble playing. The Flanders Recorder Academy tutors are Bart Spanhove and Paul Van Loey (Flanders Recorder Quartet, B) and guest tutor Saskia Coolen (NL). They will enrich you with a refreshing look at ensemble performance practice. You will receive countless tips and tricks, get a taste of new music and enjoy The Voice of the Recorder, an evening concert in the magnificent halls of d’Ursel Castle. This course will motivate each passionate recorder enthusiast!


Paul Van Loey and Bart Spanhove

Paul Van Loey and Bart Spanhove are members of the Flanders Recorder Quartet. They have both given lectures, concerts, workshops and masterclasses from Tokyo to New York and from Singapore to South Africa. They are pleased to pass on their expertise through the ‘Flanders Recorder Academy’.

Paul Van Loey is artistic director of the Flanders Baroque Academy and he also plays bassoon in many renowned orchestras.
Bart Spanhove has made his mark publishing ensemble playing and technical practice methods. Moeck Publishers have just released his latest work, The Finishing Touch to Practising.

Saskia Coolen (guest tutor)

Saskia Coolen is a member of the Camerata Trajectina and has performed extensively with La Fontegara Amsterdam and Brisk. She has also taught for many years at the conservatoires of Hilversum and Amsterdam. At present she leads numerous courses and masterclasses throughout Europe and the United States. Her latest CD (March 2015) features original 18th century recorders.



The programme follows four different themes:

  • English Consort Music
  • Contemporary Music
There will be recorder choirs, single-part ensembles, low recorder consorts etc.

Additionally, established ensembles have the opportunity to receive an extra hour of coaching (please confirm when enrolling).
